Electrical Permit

Also known as: electrical work permit, wiring permit

A permit required before installing, altering, or expanding electrical systems in a structure.

An electrical permit authorizes work on a building's electrical system, including service entrance, panels, branch circuits, lighting, and specialty circuits. In Texas, electrical work in most jurisdictions must be performed by a licensed electrician and inspected by the AHJ. Electrical permits are required for new construction wiring, panel upgrades, EV charger installations, solar system interconnections, and significant circuit additions. The National Electrical Code (NEC), as locally adopted, governs the work.

Why it matters for contractors

Standalone electrical permits — especially panel upgrades and EV charger installs — are growing in frequency and represent discrete, high-margin jobs that electrical contractors can capture directly from permit data.
