Permit Glossary

Mechanical Permit

Also known as: HVAC permit, mechanical work permit

A permit required for the installation, replacement, or modification of HVAC systems and related mechanical equipment.

A mechanical permit authorizes work on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, and related mechanical systems within a structure. In Texas, mechanical work is governed by the International Mechanical Code (IMC) as adopted and amended by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners or local jurisdictions. A mechanical permit is typically required for new HVAC installation, equipment replacement (in many jurisdictions), ductwork modifications, and commercial exhaust systems. Inspections verify proper installation, sizing, and code compliance.

Why it matters for contractors

Mechanical permits often trail a building permit by 30–90 days on new construction — making them a reliable trigger signal for HVAC contractors to call the job and confirm subcontract availability.
